Welcome to the Mental Health Review Board of Victoria
The Mental Health Review Board (MHRB) is an independent statutory tribunal established under the Victorian Mental Health Act 1986 (the Act). The Act sets down the criteria that must be satisfied for a person to receive involuntary treatment for a mental illness, in either a hospital or the community. The primary function of the Board is to decide whether people being treated as involuntary patients meet those criteria in order for involuntary treatment to continue. If the Board does not believe those criteria are met, it discharges a person from involuntary status, enabling that person to make their own decisions regarding treatment.
